Les Clefs d'Or... Excellence in Customer Service

A five star hotel earns its respect from the service the guests receive from the staff. You can have a spectacular hotel filled with priceless items from around the world but if you have bad service you will never go back no matter how grand and famous it is. It is all about the service. And so it is with the concierge. Their job is to get you what you want when you want which is usually NOW! and to do it graciously. So how do you distinguish a great concierge from the rest? Have a close look at their lapel. If you can see a pin with two gold keys crossed over each other than you have found the best of the best. Be prepared to receive superior service. But what do these keys mean you ask? I will tell you… They are the logo for the prestigious organisation called Les Clefs d’Or (pronounced lay clay door). Keys of Gold. To open any door with panache of course. The organisation was started in France in October 1929. Members have worked hard to earn their keys.

A member must have many years of hard work and training behind them. They need to be calm when it is hectic. Discretion is key! They must know everything that is going on in their city and can advise guests of the best of everything available in their city. This includes the best restaurants, nightlife, shopping, theatre and sightseeing tours. Since they serve in the best hotels the world has to offer they would receive guests from all over the world which means most of them know two or more languages. Members are also community conscious and hold fundraisers. To officially become a member they: 1. Must be over 21 years old 2. Must have worked in a hotel in any capacity for over 5 years but at least 3 years as a full time concierge in a hotel. 3. Must have two sponsorship documents from two full Les Clef d'Or members. 4. Must have a letter of recommendation from the general manager of the hotel they work in. Once they have all this they: 1. Send in their application to the Executive Assistant at Les Clefs d'Or who checks the application is completed in full and that the applicant complies with all the rules. 2. The Executive Assistant then passes on the application to the Director of Membership who distributes the application to the regional committee for consideration. They then accept or deny the application.
